What is Banpeiyu

The world's largest citrus fruit, with a fruit weight of 4.8 kg and a circumference of 83.5 cm.

Banpeiyu (晩白柚, Banpeiyu, Scientific name: Citrus maxima) is an evergreen medium-to-tall tree fruit belonging to the genus Citrus in the Rutaceae (Citrus) family, native to the Malay Peninsula.

It is known by the English names Banpeiyu and Citrus grandis 'Banpeiyu'.
It is a cultivated variety of Pomelo (or Shaddock), noted as the largest variety of citrus fruit, with large specimens exceeding 3 kg.

The tree height is 1.5–4 m (5–13 ft), and the trunk and branches have thorns.
The leaves have winged petioles of 1.5–3 cm (0.6–1.2 in). The leaves are glossy, fragrant, and dotted with oil glands. They are oblong, 10 cm (4 in) long and 4–8 cm (1.6–3.1 in) wide, and arranged alternately.
It produces white, day-blooming flowers in late March, which are followed by fruit.
The fruit is used as a New Year's decoration, the peel is used for candying (sugar preservation), and the pulp is mild with a balance of tartness and sweetness, making it suitable for eating fresh, as well as in jellies, juices, candied products, and confectionery ingredients.

Origin of the Name
Japanese Name Origin: The Japanese name "Banpeiyu" (晩白柚) is a compound word combining: "Ban" (晩, late, referring to its late maturity); "Pei" (白, white or light), referring to the light color of the pulp; and "Yu" (柚, yuzu/pomelo), meaning a round citrus fruit in Chinese.
Genus Name Origin: The genus name "Citrus" comes from the Latin "Kitron" (Lemon tree).
Species Epithet Origin: The specific epithet "maxima" means "largest," referring to the large size of the fruit.
