What is Citrus tachibana

Tachibana (Citrus tachibana) is a species of evergreen broad-leaved shrub in the mandarin orange family Rutaceae , and is endemic to Japan. It has been loved as a sacred tree since ancient times, appearing in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), Nihonshoki (Chronicles of Japan), and Manyoshu (Anthology of Man'yoshu). In modern times, however, it is rare and grows wild in the mountains along the coast. It is a wild tangerine with a brown trunk and green young branches with thorns. The leaves are cortical, stiff and shiny, and have a fresh fragrance when bruised. In late spring to early summer, it produces small white five-petaled flowers from the leaf axils. In autumn and early winter, it bears small yellow fruits, which are sour and cannot be eaten raw. It is used as a garden plant, potted plant, cut flower, fruit wine, jam, seasoning, and the leaves and flowers are used as designs for family crests and patterns.
