Zingiber zerumbet, Wild ginger or Shampoo ginger (Scientific name: Zingiber zerumbet) is a perennial herb of the ginger family,Zingiberaceae, native to India and the Malay Peninsula. It grows wild on the forest floor in tropical rainforests. It was brought to Hawaii by the Polynesians. It produces cone-shaped head flowers in summer. The head flowers are initially green with overlapping scales and yellowish-white florets between them. Later, the head flowers turn bright red and are filled with a fragrant mucus. The flowers and rhizome are used as shampoo and herbal medicine, and the juice is dissolved in water for drinking. The flowers are beautiful and can be planted in gardens or cut as flowers.
