What is Shirage Echigo-Toranoo

Echigo-Toranoo (scientific name: Veronica kiusiana Furumi var. maritima) and Shirage Echigo-Toranoo (scientific name: Veronica kiusiana Furumi var. canescens) are both endemic to Japan. It is a large perennial herb of the genus Luritranoidea. They grow wild along the Sea of Japan coast from Hokuriku to Tohoku. It is 50 to 90 cm tall. The leaves are broadly ovate with serrated edges, and are attached to the stem in opposite pairs. It produces a raceme of inflorescences with blue-purple flowers that bloom from the bottom to the top. The corolla is cup-shaped with four deep lobes at the tip, and the two stamens protrude longer than the corolla. The throat of the flower has several white hairs. The ECHIGOTRANO as well as the white-fringed ECHIGOTRANO resemble the KUGAISHO, but the leaves are thicker and shinier. Unlike Echigotrano (maritima), the leaves of Shirahigoeigotrano (canescens) are densely covered with white hairs on both sides and are not glossy.
