Siberian hydrangea

Siberian hydrangea or the Ezo hydrangea (scientific name: Hydrangea serrata var. megacarpa) is a variety of the mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata), native to Japan. It grows naturally in snow-covered areas in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, and the Korean Peninsula. The petiolate leaves are 10 to 17 cm long and elliptic, with sharp serrations on the leaf margins. From May to August, flower stalks grow from the leaf axils and produce large inflorescences 10-17 cm in diameter at the tips. The inflorescence has a small, bisexual, sky-blue central flower surrounded by 4-petaled, 3 cm diameter, ornamental flowers. The flowers are single-petaled and come in a variety of colors, including sky blue, white, blue-purple, white, peach, and red. The flowers and tree height are larger than those of the mountain hydrangea.
