What is Asarum sakawanaum

Asarum sakawanaum or Sakawasaishin (scientific name: Asarum sakawanaum) is a variety of Asarum. Its name comes from the fact that Dr. Tomitaro Makino collected it in Sagawa Town, Kochi Prefecture, and published it in a botanical journal, It is endemic to Japan and grows naturally on the forest floor of low mountains in Shikoku, mainly in Kochi Prefecture. The long petiolate leaves are elliptic with a pointed tip and a deep heart shape at the base. The leaf color is dark green with many cloud patterns. The flowers are produced in May to June with three jointed sepals that look like flowers without degenerating. The flower color (calyx tube color) is light yellow at the tip and purple in the center.
