What is Epilobium hornemannii
Hornemann's willowherb or Miyama Akabana in Japanese(Epilobium hornemannii)
is an alpine perennial in the genus Epilobium of the Onagraceae family, found in the cool temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere, including Japan.
In Japan, it grows wild on alpine gravelly slopes from central Honshu northward to Hokkaido.
It grows to a height of 5–45 cm. The stem has two ridges and is covered with glandular hairs.
The leaves are oblong to lanceolate, with serrated margins.
A conical inflorescence extends from the leaf axils near the top of the stem, bearing sparse, small, pale red or, rarely, white flowers.
The flowers have four petals, each with two shallow lobes at the tip. There are eight stamens: four are long, and the remaining four are short.
The stigma of the pistil is club-shaped.
After flowering, it produces four-angled capsules 2.5–5 cm long.
The seeds are oblanceolate, 1–1.2 mm long.
