What is Pine

Birth flowers for Jan 1, Jan 19, Nov 14

Pine (scientific name: Pinus) is an evergreen conifer of the family Pinaceae, native to the northern hemisphere, including Japan. Conifers are trees that are found primarily in the northern hemisphere and have thin, needle-like leaves to prevent the leaves from dissipating heat. Pines have two to five leaves in a bundle in one place that stick to the branch and fall off the branch after a few years. The flowers are dioecious, and each plant has a male flower with only stamens and a female flower with only stamens. The fruit is spherical and forms a pinecone. The small light yellow scales between the pine cones are the pine nuts; the black and red pine ones are too small to be used. Injuring a pine tree removes the pine sap, but over time it hardens into amber. Amber can be used as jewelry, but many movie buffs may remember it from the movie "Jurassic Park" where insects were trapped in it. In the red pine forest, the matsutake mushroom grows. The tree has been popular in Japan since ancient times and is used in song and dance and as a tool for traditional art.
