What is Tecoma stans

Tecoma stans (scientific name: Tecoma stans) is native to the Bahamas and is a nonchill-resistant, evergreen, semi-vining shrub in the genus Tecomaa of the family Bignoniaceae. It is considered the national flower of the Bahamas. It is also known as yellow elder, yellow-flowered Chinese skunkvine, Kinreiju, or Kin Suzuki. The tree is 8 to 10 meters tall with a trunk diameter of about 25 cm. The bark is light gray to brown. The leaves are yellowish green to dark green, odd pinnate compound, with 3 to 7 leaflets. The leaflets are lanceolate to elliptic, with serrated edges, and are arranged in pairs. Inflorescences are produced from the leaf axils, and more than 50 bright yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers are produced. The flowers are smaller than those of the Chinese honeysuckle, and have several red longitudinal stripes on the inside of the throat, which are slightly raised. The flowers are fragrant and attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Flowering season is year-round (especially in spring and fall) in the local area, and from August to mid-October in Japan.
The fruit is an elongated capsule 10-25.5 cm long, green, and turns brown when ripe. Fruits are produced year-round (especially in spring and winter) in its native region. The bark, flowers, leaves, and fruit are used as a diuretic, to relieve stomach pain, to lower blood sugar, and to treat diabetes, syphilis, and intestinal parasites. The species name "stans" means "upright.
