Prickly Umbrella

Prickly Umbrella (scientific name: Wercklea ferox) is a shrub of the family Malvaceae native to Costa Rica. Small thorns are formed in rows in the green rounded large leaf table, red leaf veins are conspicuous on the foliage. The petioles emerging from the leaf axil and the flower stem and the calyx at its tip are bright red. Petal-shaped flowers bloom like a buddha like flower buds with petals similar to yellow hibiscus on red calyx. The English name is called Prickly Umrella because leaves are like umbrellas full of thorns. Genus name is attributed to Costa Rica plant collector Mr. Carl Werckle. Although it is a plant which does not resemble completely, Great St. Johnswort (Scientific name: Hypericum ascyron) makes flowers bloom in a bamboo shape.
