What is Brunfelsia latifolia

Brunfelsia latifolia, Yesterday-Today-and-Tomorrow, or the nioban matsuri , scientific name: Brunfelsia latifolia, synonyms: Brunfelsia australis) is a semi-cold hardy evergreen shrub of the Brunfelsia genus (Solanaceae), native to tropical America, including Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. It looks like a mixture of blue-purple and white flowers on a single tree, because the blue-purple flowers bloom first and then turn white after a day or two. The white flowers then fall off. Also known simply as banmatsuri (Bansamari). It is sometimes referred to by its scientific name, Brunfelsia. The herb is 30-350 cm tall. The leaves are green, 4-12 cm long, oblong-ovate, with a full margin, and the flowers are 3-4 cm in diameter, funnel-shaped, with five lobes at the tip, from April to July.
A yellow-flowered variety, Brunfelsia densiflora, is in the same family. The Japanese knotweed is similar to jasmine, but is in a completely different family, as jasmine is a member of the Moraceae family.

Origin of flowername
The Japanese name 'Nioi-Banmatsuri' (smell of jasmine, scientific name: Jasmimum sambac) is similar to the 'smell' of '茉莉' (jasmine), and is derived from its arrival from 'Ban(蕃)' (foreign countries) at the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912). The genus name 'Brunfelsia' is a dedication to the German theologian and botanist Dr 'Otto Brunfels'. The species name 'latifolia' is a compound of 'lati' (broad) + 'folia' (leaf), meaning 'broad leaf'.

Language of flowers
