What is Cerasus laveilleana

Cerasus laveilleana or Kasumi-zakura (Cerasus laveilleana) is a deciduous broad-leaved tree native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and China, belonging to the cherry family Rosaceae. In Japan, it is distributed in the cool and cold mountainous regions of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku. Its flowers are similar to those of the yamazakura (Cerasus jamasakura), but they are slightly smaller and look like a haze from a distance, hence its name. Flowering season is late compared to other cherry trees, from late April (Tokyo) to May (at higher elevations). Flowers and leaves develop at the same time. The leaves are green and do not initially turn red like those of the yamazakura (Cerasus jamasakura). Short hairs grow on the petiole. It produces a diffuse inflorescence with 2 to 3 flowers.
