What is Suoubai
Suoubai (scientific name: Prunus mume 'Suoubai') is a classic cultivar of the deciduous small tree "Prunus mume" of the genus of Prunus, cultivated since the Edo period. It is a hanaume(flowering plum tree) -hibai-kei(scarlet plum type) - hibai-syou(scarlet plum). The height of the tree is 3 to 6 meters. Flowering occurs from early February to mid-March, before the foliage is set. The flowers are dark red, double-petaled, medium-sized, 2-3 cm in diameter, and open flat. The stamens are almost as long as the petals. The flowers are followed by spherical kernels 2-3 cm in diameter that ripen to yellow. It is similar to the "Kagoshimakou" which is also a hana-bai - scarlet plum tree - of the same species.
The differences are as follows. Suoubai: Flowers are two-petaled and dark reddish-black. Kagoshimakou: 3-ply flowers, bright dark red.
