What is Edogiku 'Hanachirusato'
Edogiku 'Hanachirusato' (Scientific name: Chrysanthemum morifolium 'Hana-chiru-sato') is a type of ornamental chrysanthemum bred during the Edo period in Japan.
"Edogiku" refers to a variety of chrysanthemum known for its irregular blooming pattern, which became popular in Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804–1830), the generation following Tsutaya Jūzaburō—also known as "Tsutashige"—who was the protagonist in the NHK Taiga drama Berabou and made his mark in publishing.
A distinctive feature of 'Hanachirusato' is its ray florets, which are shaped like straws.
In Edogiku, the flower normally consists of disc florets in the center and ray florets around the edges, but as it blooms, the disc florets begin to rise up from the center, bend, and eventually cover the disc florets entirely.
From bud to full bloom takes about 10 days, followed by 10 days of erratic and artistic transformation, and another 10 days of dramatic change—making it a chrysanthemum that shows daily transformation for about a month.
