“A Red Wish”
~Poinsettia~
Story by Copilot and Illustration by Gemini.
Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima)
The poinsettia spread its red leaves and gazed at the sky.
“Why are you so deeply red?” asked the snow spirit.
“Because when I wished for someone dear to be happy,
my heart grew warm, and before I knew it, I turned red.”
The snow spirit smiled softly.
“That wish has surely reached them.”
On Christmas morning, the poinsettia’s red
shone like a light, gently illuminating someone’s heart.
Poinsettia
Poinsettia or commonly called as Christmas Flower (Scientific name: Euphorbia pulcherrima) is native to Mexico and is an evergreen shrub of the Euphorbiaceae family. It is Christmas flower to greet the best time in the popular Christmas season. What looks like a red flower is a bract, not a flower. The name poinsettia is derived from Mexican ambassador J. R. Poinset of the United States brought back from Mexico and was disseminated. Because it is a short day plant, beautiful bracts will be for appreciation by suppressing sunshine hours from around September by enclosing it in a cardboard box every evening to the next morning. In the same genus, there are Euphorbia marginata(Hatsuyukisou, Scientific name:Euphorbia marginata). This is a plant with beautiful leaves contrasting with white coverings on the green leaf edge. Also,in the same genus, there is a Euphorbia cyathophora commonly called as fire-on-the-mountain (scientific name: E. cyathophora), a part of the leaves turn red.
